Students of Capoeira gain endurance, flexibility, agility, and strength in their overall fitness. On top of that, classes are both challenging and fun. It’s a great way to meet lots of fantastic people, and spend your time doing something both culturally enlightening and socially constructive. Contra-Mestre Leo Santos 'Gringo' also teaches the songs of Capoeira, which are sung in Brazilian Portuguese, songs are translated into English and explained to the students. Another important component of this art form is learning how to play the traditional the instruments of Capoeira: they are the Berimbau (believed to be one of the first string instruments created), the Atabaque (drum), the Pandeiro (covered tamborine), the Agogo (a wooden version of cowbells) & Reco-Reco (a scraper instrument). Classes consist of a combination of traditional martial arts, Capoeira and modern sports science exercises to warm up, followed by singing, then whole class, individual, and partner exercises. Classes finish with a cool down or in a roda of music and Capoeira, where students demonstrate the techniques they have learnt in that night’s class, and from previous classes.
